Why Corporate culture

Why Corporate Culture?

The need to infuse or establish a corporate culture can not be overemphasized.

In starting out a business, most Entrepreneurs and founders tend to ignore this major element of business building & in the long run, they get to pay massively for this error.

Your corporate culture represents the personality of the company. I strongly believe it is the foundation of the branding process of any organisation. It defines the environment in which employees work. It is made up of various elements such as work environment, company mission, values, ethics, expectations and goals.

For example, Google despite its tremendous growth still feels like a small company with an informal atmosphere because it adopted a “team-based culture” with employee participation on all levels.

Corporate culture is important to employees because workers are more likely to enjoy their time at work when they fit in with the company culture. Research has shown that people tend to be more productive and develop better relationships with co-workers when their needs and values are consistent with those in the workplace.

At every opportunity I get to interact any Entrepreneur, I stress the fact that organisational culture and values are not to be trifled with or taken for granted. It should be one of the first things to pay attention to during the process of team building. Even amongst two co-founders, it has to be clearly defined and established.

Your corporate culture is everything. It is either built on trust or fear from whichever perspective you look at it from.

“Your culture is your brand”. -Tony Hsieh.

There are 8 elements that are attributed to all culture types universally. These are:

  1. Learning
  2. Purpose
  3. Caring
  4. Order
  5. Safety
  6. Authority
  7. Results
  8. Enjoyment

As a leader and founder, if your business is going to experience certain levels of growth and productivity, it is important you pay attention to your corporate culture. Set it right at the beginning, so you don’t have to go through an overhauling process in the future, which would cost you more than it would now.
